How to choose a battery for data center & ups
Start with temperature, not runtime. The battery room temperature drives 80% of the lifetime calculation. A data center kept at 22–25 °C gets the full 15–20-year design life from Pure Lead AGM — every 10 °C above rated cuts life in half.
5 vs. 30 minute backup — most peers pick 5–15 min. Generator cutover in a well-commissioned site is 8–30 seconds. 5 minutes is enough for clean transfer plus short genset fault windows. Going to 30 minutes triples string size and CAPEX for marginal benefit — only justified when there is no generator, or remote sites without on-call operators.

Can I mix Pure Lead batteries with my existing VRLA string?
No. Internal resistance and float voltage windows differ by 20–80 mV between Pure Lead and standard VRLA — the new cells take disproportionate current and age out in 2–3 years instead of 10. Replace the whole string in one shot, or run two fully isolated strings on separate rectifiers.
What's the actual CAPEX difference between a 5-minute and a 30-minute backup at 300 kVA?
String count scales roughly linearly with runtime at high-rate: a 300 kVA UPS needs about 60 × 12 V 100 Ah cells for 5 minutes and 180+ cells for 30 minutes. CAPEX typically 2.5–3× plus bigger cabinet footprint. Rarely justified when a commissioned genset transfers in under a minute.
How do I verify my battery room actually stays at 25 °C?
Place a calibrated temp logger at string midpoint (not on the floor, not near HVAC vents) and record for 30 days including one weekend. Many rooms we audit show 28–32 °C peaks during weekend HVAC setbacks that no-one noticed — enough to halve Pure Lead design life if sustained.
What's the right time to start a mid-life capacity test on a Pure Lead Max bank?
Year 5. IEEE 1188 recommends annual impedance tests but a full discharge capacity test at year 5 catches any weak cell before the critical-load years. We schedule this alongside UPS PM.
My quote compares "Pure Lead Max" against a "8-year VRLA equivalent". Are they really equivalent?
No. Equal warranty length ≠ equal design life. An 8-year VRLA under float-only duty at 25 °C will last 8–10 years; a Pure Lead Max under the same conditions lasts 15+. If your UPS stays longer than 10 years you will pay for two VRLA rounds vs one Pure Lead round.
